Structural extensions to the side, rear and loft area

We recently undertook an ambitious transformation project for clients with a very specific dream: they wanted a London base that could serve as a generous, welcoming home for their large and extended family. To make this reality, a simple renovation did not suffice. We needed to maximize every square inch of the footprint and the airspace to create a spacious, multi-generational hub.

A Comprehensive Transformation

To achieve these requirements, we executed a massive structural overhaul that touched every part of the property. The project involved a double side and rear extension, but the most dramatic change was the full removal of the original roof. In its place, we constructed a completely new, extended roof structure designed to maximize head height and habitable space.

By extending the roofline, we were able to incorporate four new bedrooms, each with its own en-suite. This turned the top floor from a simple storage loft into a luxury accommodation wing capable of hosting the entire extended family in comfort, flooded with natural light through large Velux-styled windows.

Emphasising Open-Plan Living

The project scope involved both a vertical extension and a footprint expansion to facilitate an open-plan ground floor layout. To meet the requirements for a modern social space, significant structural remodelling was executed to remove existing load-bearing walls.

Key technical aspects included:

• Steel Installation: High-capacity steel beams were installed to span the increased width of the property.

• Load Management: These structural members support the weight of the newly added upper floors, transferring the load to the external foundations.

• Spatial Integration: The removal of internal partitions created a unified floor plan, integrating the kitchen, dining, and living zones into a singular functional areas.
